Sadomasochism : Painful Perversion or Pleasurable Play? (AIDS Awareness) by Bill Thompson - Card catalog description -

The sensational conviction of fifteen gay 'sadomasochists' in 1991 provoked demands to criminalize sadomasochistic art, literature and activities. Two years later, the Law Lords' ruling on the 'Spanner' case boosted moral crusades promoting sexual correctness. Sadomasochism is a public challenge to Judge Rant's insistence that the court had to draw a line between what was and what was not acceptable in a civilized society. Thompson's lively polemic unveils the erroneous psychiatric justifications for labelling sadomasochism violent and dangerous, exposes the fallacies in the moral crusaders' assertions that SM sex leads to sex crime, and explores the major research studies to reveal the true nature of this harmless sexual proclivity. Sadomasochism then raises extremely embarrassing questions about the origins of the case and the Law Lords' ruling which seeks to make innocuous acts, from spouse spanking to teenage 'lovebites', criminal offences. In doing so, Dr. Thompson demonstrates that an appeal for tolerance would not be misplaced in a truly civilized society. --This text refers to the hardcover edition of this title.

The Mastery of Submission : Inventions of Masochism (Cornell Studies in the History of Psychiatry) by John K. Noyes

Amazon book description: Individuals sometimes derive sexual pleasure from submission to cruel discipline. While that predilection was noted as early as the sixteenth century, masochism was not codified as a concept until 1890. According to John K. Noyes, its invention reflected a crisis in the liberal understanding of subjectivity and sexuality which continues to inform discussions of masochism today. In essence, it remains a political concept.

Viennese physician Richard von Krafft-Ebing coined the term masochism, based on the work of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Noyes analyzes the social and political problems that inspired the concept, suggesting, for example, that the triumphant expansion of European colonialism was in part animated by an ambivalence in masculine sexuality.

Noyes documents the evolution of the concept of masochism with scenes in literature from John Cleland's Fanny Hill through Sacher-Masoch's Venus in Furs and Pauline Reage's Story of O. Analysis of Freud's vastly influential rereading of masochism precedes an exploration of the work of his successors, including Wilhem Reich, Theodor Reik, Helene Deutsch, and Karen Horney. Noyes suggests that the thematics of feminine masochism emerged only gradually from an exclusively male concept.

The Erotic Mind : Unlocking the Inner Sources of Sexual Passion and Fulfillment by Jack Morin

From the Publisher : Challenging accepted theories about what makes for terrific sex, The Erotic Mind is a breakthrough exploration of the least understood dimensions of human sexuality -- the psychology of desire, arousal, and fulfillment. Nationally known sex therapist Dr. Jack Morin offers a bold new perspective that celebrates the joys of Eros without denying its risks.

Based on an in-depth analysis of over 1,000 provocative stories of peak sexual experiences, The Erotic Mind offers clear, accessible guidance on how anyone can utilize his or her own peak encounters and fantasies as powerful tools of self-discovery.

The Erotic Mind explains the many paradoxes of erotic life, such as: why we're most excited when we must overcome obstacles; how anxiety, guilt, and anger -- generally thought to have a negative impact on sexual arousal -- often turn out to be aphrodisiacs; how we use unresolved issues from our early lives to intensify passion; and why the best sex is dynamic and unpredictable, rather than static and safe.

These and other insights, combined with concrete suggestions for increasing our enjoyment, overcoming our problems, and revitalizing our relationships, will change forever the way we think about our eroticism.
